Credentials and Experience
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT 97196), having received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology with an emphasis in Child and Adolescent Development from Saint Mary's College of California and, a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Francisco. I have been trained in multiple evidenced based practices including; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Structural Family Therapy, Triple P parenting Skill set, and assessment in Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT).
As a clinician, I have worked in a multitude of settings ranging from a level 12 residential care facility , to foster care programs, to intensive outpatient clinics, schools, and lockdown facilities. Within all those settings I have provided individual and family therapy, consultation on treatment, and psychosocial assessment and diagnosis.
My passion for golf started in high school with San Francisco Parks and Recreation Youth Golf program as an Assistant Instructor, helping develop basic golf skills to youth in the community. I went on to get his Bachelors in Psychology with an emphasis on youth Neuro-Development. I then returned to the SF Park and Rec Youth Golf program as Lead Instructor while getting his Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of San Francisco. I moved away from work with athletes and went into the service profession getting his license in Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT) serving the greater Bay Area. I would then return to the sports psychology arena by embarking on his Brazilian jiu-jitsu career in 2013, helping himself and other practitioners prepare for intense competition in multiple tournaments. Sergio hopes to combine his experience in golf, jiu-jitsu, and psychotherapy to help other athletes reach higher levels of awareness, processing, and focus in and out of the competitive arena.
Aside from mental health and sports psychology, I am a husband, proud father, Brown belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu, and golf enthusiast. Prior to becoming a therapist and mindfulness coach, I served as a golf coach for youth with the athletics program at San Francisco Parks and Recreation. I started my Jiujitsu journey in 2013. I currently train at Peninsula Self Defense under Coral Belt Jean Jauque Machado in Redwood City, CA. I combine my lived experience with my knowledge of trauma treatment to provide a well rounded approach to therapy and coaching.
